Thursday, on his 68th birthday, Lakers legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar underwent quadruple coronary bypass surgery. The hospital released a statement that said the surgery was successful and Abdul-Jabbar is expected to make a full recovery.

On this April 17, 1955, the RF debuted for the Pirates. Among his career accomplishments: Four NL batting titles, the 1966 NL MVP and 12 straight Gold Gloves. Clemente died in a plane crash in 1972 while delivering aid to his homeland of Puerto Rico.
