Jeff Gordon will compete for the first time in eight months as a substitute driver for Dale Earnhardt Jr., who will miss the second of at least three races because of balance and nausea likely caused by a concussion. Gordon: "It's a steep learning curve to be off the track this long and jump in here, but luckily I have a great race car and great race team that is going to help me get through it."

Jeff Gordon took to the podium at the prerace drivers meeting to say "Thank you" to Tony Stewart for what he 's done in the sport. The drivers gave Stewart a standing ovation. This will be Stewart's last Brickyard 400 as Stewart plans to retire from Sprint Cup racing after this season.

Chicago White Sox GM Rick Hahn declined to characterize the level of interest Chris Sale has generated on the trade market this far but he did indicate that he does not expect this incident to impact his value among any interested clubs.

Chicago White Sox suspend pitcher Chris Sale five days for "violating team rules, for insubordination and for destroying team equipment." GM Rick Hahn said that Sale will not be allowed around team until the expiry of his suspension. Hahn met with Sale to discuss the incident and both aired their grievances in the situation. Hahn said the team was "disappointed" with how it was handled but said that this will not affect Sale's value to the team "one iota."
