"If I don't play him, then everyone thinks he is done and I don't necessarily think that," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said of 40-year-old Alex Rodriguez, who is not in the lineup for second straight game. "I still think that he can still be productive for us. I chose to give him a day off yesterday, he played basically six days in a row [counting two minor league rehab games] and [J.A.] Happ has been a tough matchup for him so I chose to give him today off."

Brett Gardner, whom A-Rod is conversing with, is also on the pine against Blue Jays lefty J.A. Happ on Tuesday. A-Rod is hitting .170 on the season.

David Wright received an injection in his neck on Tuesday from team doctors. Terry Collins said the shot needs 48 hours to take effect, so it looks like Wright is active but unavailable for this series. Wright has a herniated disk in the neck. "I think it's serious," Collins said. Collins noted Bobby Parnell had the same issue and didn't respond well. The Mets decided to keep Wright active for another couple of days to see if the injection works rather than DL'ing him now.
