There's enough talent retiring from the NFL this offseason to fill out a stellar 22-man roster -- one that would have serious playoff potential if it competed as the league's 33rd team this fall.

The Seattle Mariners are among the teams that have expressed interest in Cincinnati's Jay Bruce, who is likely to be on the move by Monday's trade deadline. Seattle has received middling production from Seth Smith, Nori Aoki and Franklin Gutierrez at the corner outfield spots this season, and Bruce would provide a major upgrade in 2017. He has a $13 million club option next season.

The situation between the Chiefs and safety Eric Berry took an ominous turn with ESPN's Adam Schefter reporting Berry would miss most if not all of the preseason. This is no negotiating ploy by Berry, the Chiefs' unsigned franchise player. There's nothing to negotiate. Either Berry accepts the Chiefs' one-year contract offer worth about $10.8 million and plays or he doesn't accept it and sits out.

Birthday boy Alex Rodriguez on still being on a major league roster: "When I first started to play this game, as a a young lad, I never thought I'd be playing in the major leagues for so long; especially at 41," A-Rod said. "I'm representing all the senior citizens." Rodriguez will start the game on the bench Wednesday for the fifth straight time.

So it's done: Ryan Fitzpatrick agrees to a one-year, $12M deal, per ESPN's Adam Schefter. The recent Mo Wilkerson contract created $5.7M in cap room, which made it possible to take a $12 M cap hit for Fitzpatrick. Still surprised, though. A while back, the Jets had no interest in a one-year deal. To me, Fitzpatrick wins.

Adam Schefter @AdamSchefter

Ryan Fitzpatrick deal also includes another $3 million in incentives, which could boost value to $15 million, per source.

Adam Schefter @AdamSchefter

So as expected (four months ago), Jets and Ryan Fitzpatrick reach agreement on 1-year deal, per sources. Fitz is back (or never left).

Dirk Nowitzki's deal is official. The Mavs announced that Nowitzki re-signed Wednesday.

The Milwaukee Brewers' trade talks involving Jonathan Lucroy have gained momentum, and it's looking more and more as if they'll move him by Monday's deadline. Cleveland, Houston and Texas are all in the mix for Lucroy, and at least three other clubs have expressed interest. It's almost time for general manager David Stearns to ask for everyone's best offer and make his call.

David Schoenfield ESPN Senior Writer

Jay Bruce continues to hit home runs and his trade value continues to go up. His 25th home run proved to be the winning run in the Reds' 2-1 win over the slumping Giants. Bruce has always had a big home/road split, but he's hitting everywhere right now, which should make him an attractive option to the Dodgers, Mariners, Giants or Indians.
