The Carolina Hurricanes have signed coach Bill Peters to a contract extension through the 2018-19 season, the team announced Wednesday. "Bill is a talented, young coach in the National Hockey League," said GM Ron Francis. "We are happy that he has made a commitment to the Hurricanes, and that he will be a major part of the team continuing to grow." This is a good move for the Hurricanes. The team is young and talented and fed off Peters' energy and knowledge of the game. In two seasons behind the bench, Peters, 50, has led Carolina to a 65-72-27 record.

The Chiefs begin this morning a three-day camp for rookies, quarterbacks and some players coming off injuries. That last group includes running back Jamaal Charles, who practiced little in the offseason. But expect little or nothing from Charles for these three days even if he's cleared medically. "That isn't what these three days are for," coach Andy Reid said.

The Redskins report to training camp in Richmond today. Coach Jay Gruden will hold a press conference at 3 p.m., but players won't be available until after Thursday morning's walk-through.
