Since its first contest in 1902, the Rose Bowl has become the "granddaddy" of all bowl games. Most games have been more competitive since that first contest, a 49-0 whitewashing of Stanford by Michigan. Many of them have been classic battles.

1902 - Michigan 49, Stanford 0 More After its first contest in 1902, no one could have anticipated the Rose Bowl would one day become the "granddaddy" of all bowl games.

1975 - S. California 18, Ohio State 17 More They opened the season with a humiliating loss, but ended it less than four months later playing in the Rose Bowl. Oh, what a reversal of fortune for the 1974 USC Trojans.

1988 - Michigan St. 20, USC 17 More Nearly a quarter century. That's how long the Spartans had waited since their last trip to the Rose Bowl. After 22 years of placing anywhere but first in the Big Ten, Michigan State finally made it to Pasadena to face, of all teams, USC.

1989 - Michigan 22, USC 14 More Coming into the 1989 Rose Bowl, many questioned whether or not Michigan could withstand a USC team led by 1988 Heisman Trophy runner-up and All-American linebacker Junior Seau.

1993 - Michigan 38, Washington 31 More The Washington Huskies took home the Rose Bowl trophy in 1991 and 1992. On New Year's Day 1993, running back Tyrone Wheatley and the Michigan Wolverines thwarted the Huskies' attempt to become the first team to win three Roses in a row.

1994 - Wisconsin 21, UCLA 16 More From 1947 through 1998, the Rose Bowl's Big Ten representative usually hailed from Ann Arbor, Mich., or Columbus, Ohio. Once in a while, though, a team other than Michigan or Ohio State would sneak in. 1994's surprise entry was the Wisconsin Badgers.

1997 - Ohio State 20, Arizona State 17 More The 1997 Rose Bowl between Ohio State and Arizona State featured one of the most dramatic endings in Rose Bowl history.
