Breakdown: Maryland-Florida

Ralph Friedgen returned to his alma mater known as an offensive guru, but Maryland's first-year head coach did more than ignite the Terrapins' offense. Maryland ranked 30th in the nation in defense this season, allowing just 330.1 yards per game, the lowest since the 1985 team surrendered 305.1 yards per game. The 1985 team was also the last one to win an ACC championship.
Friedgen now has the Terrapins playing in their first January bowl since the 1977 Cotton Bowl. Maryland's last win in a January bowl game dates all the way back to 1952 when the Terps knocked off Tennessee in the Sugar Bowl.
On Jan. 2, Maryland faces a daunting task against a Florida team that is kicking itself for blowing its chance to face Miami in the national championship game.
