Breakdown: LSU-Illinois

LSU and Illinois have a pair of backup quarterbacks to thank for making the BCS. The Tigers turned to Matt Mauck when Rohan Davey got hurt, and he proceeded to engineer the Tigers to a 31-20 upset of Tennessee to win the SEC championship. The Fighting Illini are headed to New Orleans because Ohio State backup QB Craig Krenzel helped the Buckeyes upset Michigan in Ann Arbor, giving the Big Ten championship to Illinois.
This will be the first meeting between LSU and Illinois, but Tigers coach Nick Saban knows the Illini well. During his five-year tenure as head coach of Michigan State, he was 5-0 against Illinois.
