OAKLAND, California -- For the first time since 1988,
the Oakland Raiders swept bitter AFC West rival Kansas City in a
season series. And it was especially sweet for former Chiefs
Rich Gannon and Andre Rison.
| | | Rich Gannon went 20-of-31 for 242 yards and four touchdowns for the Raiders. |
Gannon matched a career-best with four touchdown passes,
including a pair to Rison, to lead the Raiders to a wild 49-31
victory over the Chiefs.
Kansas City's Elvis Grbac passed for a career-high and
club-record 504 yards and two touchdowns, both to Derrick
Alexander, and ran for another score. He threw for 221 yards in
the first half and 283 in the second.
The Raiders (8-1) extended their winning streak to six games and
increased their lead over Kansas City (5-4) to three games in
the AFC West. It marks the first time Oakland has started 8-1 in
a non-strike season since 1977.
Oakland has also won three straight from the Chiefs after losing
18 of the previous 20 meetings.
Gannon has led the Raiders to all three of those wins against
his former team. Today, he completed 20-of-31 passes for 242
yards with no interceptions.
A Chief from 1995-98, Gannon connected with Rison on scoring
passes of 10 and six yards to help the Raiders build a 28-10
halftime lead. Rison was waived by the Chiefs in the preseason.
Gannon threw touchdowns of 20 and two yards to tight end Rickey
Dudley in the second half.
Tyrone Wheatley rushed for 112 yards and a touchdown on 20
carries for the Raiders. He had 90 yards in the first half.
Grbac completed 39-of-53 passes, connecting with Alexander on
touchdowns of four and 48 yards in the second half.
