DENVER -- The ski industry will have to forgive the Denver
Broncos' organization for not wanting snow for Monday night's game
against the division-leading Oakland Raiders.
After last year's overtime Broncos win, the Raiders were pelted
by fans as they left the field to enter the locker room.
One Raiders' player went into the stands after the snowball
throwers, punching one fan. Eight fans were arrested for throwing
snowballs, and 13 more cited.
"I was thinking, Get to safety,' " Woodson recalled Monday.
"They were throwing snowballs on the field and you see them coming
from the top rows. You'd see them hit the ground and they wouldn't
even break. So you knew you had to get inside or you'd get hurt.
"There's no telling what could happen this year, with us being
8-1 and those crazy fans up there," wide receiver Tim Brown said.
"I've got to talk to a couple buddies I have up there in the NFL
because they've got to have more security than they had last
year."
Although the Broncos at 5-4 can't make up much ground with a
victory, feelings between the two teams are always intense. Broncos
coach Mike Shanahan believes he was shortchanged on his contract by
Raiders owner Al Davis.
The Broncos came from behind to beat the Raiders in Oakland in
their first match up this year.
Broncos director of stadium operations Gail Stuckey said there
will not be additional security at Monday night's game. Eighty
policemen, the usual number for a Monday night game, will be on
duty at Mile High Stadium. Another 230 ushers in yellow jackets,
there to monitor fan behavior, will be stationed at the stadium.
Stuckey's security personnel will be dispersed in the northeast
corner of Mile High Stadium, near the Raiders' tunnel and sideline.
"We hope for no snow," Stuckey said.
