Notes from the 1980 MNF season:
Dallas defeated Washington 17-3 in Week 1, marking the first of five times that the Cowboys and Redskins would open the regular season on Monday Night.
After going 17-43 in their first four seasons, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers made their first MNF appearance. They were shut out by the Chicago Bears 23-0. The Yucks finished 5-10-1.
The Oakland Raiders went 3-0 on MNF, and became the first wild-card team to win the Super Bowl, defeating the Philadelphia Eagles 27-10 in SB XV at the Louisiana Superdome.
In perhaps the most memorable moment of the 1980 season, on Dec. 8 in Miami, Howard Cosell showed the reach of the program during his announcement of John Lennon's death.
The final Monday Night game of the regular season was important on a number of levels. San Diego's 26-17 win over Pittsburgh earned the Chargers the AFC West title and the top seed in the conference. It was also the highest-rated game of the season (25.3, 40 percent share) and second-highest rated MNF game to date (it's now tied for fourth).
