Notes from the 1989 MNF season:
Commissioner Pete Rozelle announced his retirement in March, pending the naming of a successor, who turned out to be current commish Paul Tagliabue. The transfer became official on Nov. 5.
Jerry Jones bought the Dallas Cowboys on April 18.
The New York Giants became the second team to open their season on MNF four seasons in a row. For the second straight year, they did so against the Washington Redskins -- the first time in the program's history that two teams began their season on Monday nights in back-to-back years.
Six more MNF records were set or tied.

*Buffalo's Andre Reed caught 13 passes against Denver to set a MNF record.
*Cleveland's Bernie Kosar and Webster Slaughter connected on a 95-yard TD pass -- the longest on MNF.
*John Taylor added two more Monday Night records to his resume, all on Dec. 11 vs. the Rams: He caught two TD passes of 90-plus yards; and his 286 yards receiving eclipsed Wes Chandler's mark of 260, set in 1982.
*Joe Montana set a new Monday Night passing record with 458 yards against the Rams.
*Minnesota's barefooted kicker, Rich Karlis, became the third man to hit five field goals in a Monday Night game. Earlier that season, he tied Jim Bakken's record by kicking seven in the Vikes' 21-18 overtime victory against the Rams.
