Reaction was mixed on ABC's decision to bring John Madden to the MNF booth for the 2002 season.
As John Madden would say, "POW, WHAM, ZAP = YEAH for the MNF fans!! MNF is finally back and now I'm ready for some Football!!! Al, John, and Melissa will make an outstanding team.
John Castle, Albuquerque, NM
Thank you for hiring John Madden. Mainly because, I read that Dennis Miller is gone. Getting rid of Dennis on MNF will improve ratings. I am sure of it. He was a downer.
Rob Carpenter, Greenfield, Ind.
Aaugh. While Madden sometimes has some interesting things to say, he never knows when to stop talking.
Joy Valine, Portland, Ore.
Well, your little experiment with alienating real football fans in favor of attempting to lure non-football watching Gen-X nit-wits and housewives has been a terrific failure. Dennis Miller attracted no one. It drove away real football fans, and forced people like me to watch the whole damn game with the mute button on, rather than hear an endless tirade of moronic comments and "color" commentary about a game that Dennis had absolutely no comprehension of.
Preston, Southlake, Texas
Please tell me this is a mistake!!! In my opinion the trio of Al Michaels, Dan Fouts, and Dennis Miller combine the best of broadcast experience, football know-how, and plain-fan fun into a TERRIFIC combination!!! Long-time football fans like me love this combination of knowledge and fun!!
Rick, Dallas, Texas
You can be sure you have lost at least one viewer for the upcoming season. You guys had a great thing going with Michaels, Fouts, and Miller. Dennis Miller was a bold move, and I was skeptical. He has turned out to be a great addition! John Madden passed his prime about 5 years ago. He sounds childish, incoherent, repetitive, and simply annoying. I chose not to watch a good game on Fox last year if he was announcing.
John, Washington, D.C.
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you ... For bringing aboard John Madden. He will be sure to interject new life into the booth and hopefully drown out Dennis Miller, who in my opinion, was a HUGE mistake in the first place!
Scott, Logan, Utah
John Madden would be a welcomed addition to the MNF broadcast. During the first season with Miller, I began watching the games with the television on MUTE. Last season I watched a lot fewer games, but those that I watched were also muted. The announcers were so annoying I could not enjoy the games. Miller was intolerable and the other two seemed to snicker at his every comment like idiots. John Madden will allow the show to get back to being about Football. Thanks for hiring him and I look forward to this season.
A. Pool, Los Angeles
I am very disappointed that MNF has decided to drop Dennis and Dan. Dennis is the most intelligent human on television. Dan is God!
Dawn DeBois, San Francisco
You got Madden and got rid of Miller. I cannot think of anything better you could do.
Chris Nagel, Oak Harbor, Wash.
Congratulations! You have just lost 2 more viewers of MNF. My husband and I absolutely detest the sound of Madden's voice and his stupid commentary on what everyone is "thinking!"
Charmaine Parker, Nashville, Tenn.
Dropping Dennis Miller for John Madden?!?!? Just when MNF was really worth staying up for, someone makes yet another bad ABC programming decision...
Former fan of MNF in Indiana
Boo, hiss. Dennis Miller added wit, irreverence and intelligence to MNF, and his point of view as that of a fan was invaluable. John Madden adds food jokes and just another "expert's" viewpoint. I won't be watching.
Sarah Greene, Freeport Ill.
Congrats to MNF for dumping Miller and getting the big guy!!! You're finally on the way back!!!
Rick Beck, Chugiak, Alaska
THANK YOU!! Thank you for finally getting rid of Dennis Miller!! It means I can go back to watching with the whole family while the volume is on. John Madden may not be my favorite announcer but he brings some class back to the MNF broadcast booth.
Paul Wengwerd, Akron, Ohio
Thank you, thank you, thank you, I have been a Madden fan for years and will watch any game he broadcasts, he makes it a big time game.
Dan Cheney, Denver
Congratulations. Though I thought Dan Fouts did a great job, bringing John Madden to your team is a marvelous step towards returning "class" to MNF.
Bill Archambault, Charlottesville, Va.
John Madden Great! I can't wait. Please, Please keep Dennis Miller. His pregame comments and wit were a highlight of my week!
Craig Burnside, Corpus Christi, Texas
Finally a commentary team that will be worth staying up late for.
Bill, New York
Coming from a sports family who loves watching football, WE ARE THRILLED and suspect we will watch even a less than thrilling game just to hear MADDEN. He is delightful, educational, and just downright entertaining. YES!!!
Phyllis Ahmadi, Hilo, Hawaii
WOW!! What an incredible move for MNF! Thank the heavens that real fans of professional football do not have to endure another season of Dennis Miller and his equally useless, but not as annoying partner, Dan Fouts. Madden will raise the bar and give true fans exactly what they expect from Monday Night Football, an entertaining program from people who love the game.
Ceasar M. Perez, Champaign, Ill.
I think this is a great move by ABC. Madden is the best NFL broadcaster and will boost the ratings of MNF tremendously. I have to admit I will miss seeing him with Pat Summeral and I will miss seeing him on Thanksgiving day but Monday nights will be more exciting.
John McClarnon, West Lafayette, Ind.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!! I can finally turn my sound back up when watching Monday Night Football.
Jim, Carthage, Mo.
Not to take away from other NFL announcers, but these are the two best announcers in football. What a great idea. Way to go ABC Sports.
John Asman, Burbank, Calif.
Thank you very much. John Madden is great and he knows football. Finally ABC you got it right.
Mike Henry, Altamonte, Fla.
