Wednesday, November 21, 2001 Jammer Diary: Taking care of business By Quentin Jammer Special to ABC Sports Online
Texas cornerback Quentin Jammer is writing a weekly diary for ABC Sports Online. Jammer and the Longhorns had last week off to prepare for Friday's showdown with Texas A&M (ABC, 12 p.m. ET). Texas heads into the game sixth in the BCS. For Jammer, it will be his final regular season game as a Longhorn.
| | | Quentin Jammer is joined by Ed Reed and Roy Williams as finalists for the Thorpe Award. | This Thanksgiving week is off to a great start. I found out on Monday night that I was selected as a finalist for the Thorpe Award, which honors the nation's top defensive back. I'm really excited about that. We have a lot of team goals that we are still pushing towards and that's my top priority, but personally I set a goal to be an All-American and to win the Thorpe when I decided to come back for my senior season last January. That and the great season we are having has made it all worthwhile. And now that I've been picked as a Thorpe finalist, something that I've been told no other Texas DB has done, I'm really motivated to live up to that this week against Texas A&M.
We also had our annual A&M pep rally on Monday night and we all got really pumped up. There were at least 10,000 fans there and we tried to get them charged up. I'm really excited and ready for this game. This will be the first time I will play at Kyle Field, so I'm really looking forward to it. I was on the team and made the trip in 1997, but for whatever reason, I didn't play at all. I had started the two games before that one, but didn't play a snap against the Aggies. I missed out again in 1999 when I got hurt early in the season, but now I'm finally going to get my chance in my last regular season game.
All of us love the Texas-Texas A&M rivalry. It is real intense every year. I think the thing that makes it so intense is the fact that so many of the guys on each team know each other. A lot of us got to know each other on recruiting visits and we see each other during the summer, so we all like to get talking about who is better that year or why we won the last game. That just adds fuel to the rivalry. For me, last year was great. I got a pick on my fellow Angleton High alum Mark Farris and we won the game, so I got to go home and brag about that.
Last week was good and bad for us. We really enjoyed the time we had to rest and relax, but we were all disappointed that Texas Tech couldn't help us out and pull off the upset of Oklahoma. Some of the guys made the trip to Lubbock, but I wasn't one of them. I watched the game at home. When Ricky Williams made the big play and took a short pass and ran through the Sooner defense, I thought Tech was ready to roll. But it didn't happen. Oklahoma stepped it up and took over the game.
But we can't worry about what other people do. We have to take care of our business and let everything else work its way out. We need to be focused and play our game at A&M and hopefully win. Then we will see what happens. We have another big practice Tuesday and then we will begin getting charged up for the game on Wednesday.
Thanksgiving on Thursday will be nice. I always enjoy that day and I have a lot to give thanks for. I'm thankful that I have a wonderful family and girlfriend and that I have remained in good health. There's not much more I could ask for. As for the big part of Thanksgiving, I'm planning on spending the day with my girlfriend and getting in two good meals before I head over to College Station with the team. My girlfriend's sister's mother-in-law lives in town and we are going to go there for a dinner then we'll do a second dinner at one of my friend's.
Then it's off to the hotel with the team and time to put the game face on. It will be another early wake-up call on Friday, but we know everybody will be watching this one so hopefully we can put on a good show.
