Tuesday, November 27, 2001 Jammer Diary: I can't wait to get to Dallas By Quentin Jammer Special to ABC Sports Online
Texas cornerback Quentin Jammer, a finalist for the Thorpe Award, is writing a weekly diary for ABC Sports Online. Jammer and the Longhorns are currently third in the BCS standings and will secure a BCS bowl bid with a win on Saturday over Colorado in the Big 12 Championship game (ABC, 8 p.m. ET). Last week, Texas shut down Texas A&M, and thanks to Oklahoma's loss to Oklahoma State, won the Big 12 South Division title.
| | | Cedric Benson scores one of his two touchdowns for the Longhorns. | Wow! What a weekend we had. We went over to College Station and won a hard-fought game on Friday and thought we had positioned ourselves for a BCS game. We weren't holding out a lot of hope on Saturday, but I think everyone on the team watched the Oklahoma-Oklahoma State game hoping for a big surprise.
For me, that was a really big deal. I don't watch a lot of football on my off days, but I watched that whole game because I had a feeling Oklahoma State might make a game of it. My girlfriend, our little brothers and I were watching the game at my house and we were all going crazy. I'm surprised nobody complained because in the final few minutes of the game we were all screaming and jumping around. I thought for sure we were going to get kicked out of our apartment, but I guess everyone else in Austin was pretty excited too, so they probably understood.
Now we're in the Big 12 Championship and this is the opportunity we've been waiting for. We patiently took care of our business and hoped we would get a break. I can't thank Rashaun Woods and the rest of the Cowboys enough for helping us get that. They all played a great game, but Rashaun proved why he is one of the best receivers in the country against the Sooners. We are all really excited that everything worked well and we have a chance to reach one of our goals -- winning the Big 12 title.
We're going to play for the Big 12 title and maybe have a shot at the national title. What more can you ask for? This is the chance we've been dreaming of. It's going to be great to play Colorado since nobody expected the Buffaloes to be in Dallas either. They're not the same team that came to Austin. They will come to Dallas with a lot of confidence and emotion. Everybody talks about a rematch, but I don't look at it that way. You will see two completely different teams than you saw in October. We both have matured and are playing better. Both teams will have a different game plan as well. I think it can be a great game.
For us, we have a chance to redeem ourselves for the loss in the 1999 Championship Game. I was hurt and didn't play, but we really never got on track in that game. The defense played really well, but we just couldn't get anything going until Ahmad Brooks had the late fumble return for a TD. That was too late, though. This time we need to come out ready to play from the minute we take the field. And we will. We are ready for a great week of preparation and really want to prove we are worthy of our ranking.
This is a huge game for us if we want to play in a BCS game and we are ready to go. I can't wait to get to Dallas and battle with the Buffs again.
