ABC's College Football Saturday

No. 1 Miami 26, Virginia Tech 24

Jeremy Shockey and the 'Canes are headed to Pasadena.
There's no stopping Miami. The Hurricanes are headed to Pasadena to play for their fifth national championship. They have a little luck to thank for that after hanging on for a 26-24 victory over Virginia Tech when Ernest Wilford dropped a pass from Grant Noel on a two-point conversion with six minutes left that would have tied it for the Hokies. From there, the 'Canes defense tightened up and Ed Reed picked off his second pass of the game to complete a perfect 11-0 regular season and secure a bid to the Rose Bowl.

  • Just call the Colorado Buffaloes the Rose Bowl elimination squad. One week after erasing Nebraska's road to the national title game, they knocked Texas out of the way, too. Chris Brown ran for three touchdowns as the Buffs turned Texas quarterback Chris Simms' four first-half turnovers into 22 points, then held off a rally to beat the Longhorns 39-37 Saturday night for their first Big 12 championship. Major Applewhite nearly rallied the 'Horns to victory, but a costly running into the kicker penalty with four minutes to go ended their chances.

  • Keenan Howry returned a punt 70 yards for a touchdown, and Maurice Morris added an 8-yard scoring run with 4:36 left as Oregon kept its slim national title hopes alive with a rainswept 17-14 victory over Oregon State in the 105th Civil War. Oregon already had secured a spot in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, but the victory gave the Ducks their first outright Pac-10 title since 1994, and with Florida losing, they still have a chance to go to Pasadena. UO held Ken Simonton to 86 yards, keeping him short of 1,000 for the year for the first time in his career.

  • Vontez Duff scored on a 96-yard kickoff return and Jason Beckstrom returned an interception 29 yards for a score as Notre Dame beat Purdue 24-18 in what could be Bob Davie's last game as coach after five seasons in South Bend. The victory may have been the last for Davie, whose job status has been questioned during most of the Irish's disappointing 5-6 season and reports said he would be fired shortly after the game. Davie, who was given a five-year extension last year, said he would never resign as coach.
