Breakdown: Michigan-Tennessee
ABC Sports Online

Michigan and Tennessee each cost themselves roughly $9 million when they couldn't close out the season with wins. The Wolverines lost the Big Ten's BCS berth to Illinois when a Michigan-bred quarterback, Craig Krenzel, helped Ohio State upset UM in Ann Arbor. Tennessee's loss was even more devastating; the Volunteers could have silenced the BCS critics with a win over LSU in the SEC Championship game. Instead, the Vols dropped from a trip to the national championship game to a non-BCS bowl with Michigan in the Capital One Florida Citrus Bowl.

Now Tennessee hopes to end its recent slide in bowl games. The Vols have lost the past two years in January, although they beat their last two Big Ten opponents. Then again, Michigan has had great success against the SEC over the years. The Wolverines are 17-4-1 all-time, including wins over Auburn and Arkansas in the past three years in the Citrus Bowl.

Here's a statistical breakdown of this year's teams.

Season record
Michigan: 8-3 (6-2 Big Ten)
Tennessee: 10-2 (7-2 SEC)
