Friday, April 18, 2003 Phoenix will offer more challenges By Sarah Fisher Special to ABC Sports Online
Thanks to the help of some great people, we WILL be at the Purex Dial Indy 200 race on Sunday (ABC, 3:30 p.m. ET).
My personal sponsor, Raybestos Brand Brakes (www.raybestos.com), has stepped up to help us out with some funding to make it possible for us to run, as well as UPromise (www.Upromise.com), a scholarship fund that gives you cash back towards a college education, and outerwear clothing line WeGotGear (www.amazon.com/wegotgear), who also helped us out for the Miami-Homestead race.

While it's been tough to try and stay calm and focused (and I think I'm getting an ulcer), it's also great that people and companies like the above believe in our program enough to help us get to Phoenix in these tough economic times.
This week
Now, about Phoenix … I didn't race there last season, but we were able to attend the IRL IndyCar Series Open Test with Dreyer and Reinbold Racing in February. That gave me a chance to get back into the mindset of this very demanding 1-mile short track, and we have a baseline to start from when we unload the car off the transporter on Thursday.
Winning at Phoenix will always take a lot of patience, especially since the IRL IndyCar Series is now the most competitive it's ever been, and driving smart will get you to the winner's circle. A lap at Phoenix lets a driver practice two mindsets since the track has two very separate "corners." The first mindset consists of having to manipulate the car through Turns 1 and 2, and secondly, being smooth and precise through Turns 3 and 4. This track is similar to Miami in that it's challenging to get the car to handle well the entire lap with the differences between the corners.
If you're in the Phoenix area this week, make sure to come out to the driver's autograph session and party on Thursday from 6:30 - 8 p.m. at the Tempe Beach Park. We'll all be signing autographs during that time. Or if you can't make it out then, check out the Indy Fan Experience on the PIR Midway Saturday from 2 - 3 p.m. as I'll be signing autographs there as well.
Phoenix is a great place to watch a race and to experience the "atmosphere" but if you can't make it to the track, be sure and catch us on ABC.
