Over the last official weekend of Spring, the ABA held the Spring Nationals in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Unable to attend, the fine people over at www.go211.com managed to hook me up with video feed from the event, and ABA photographer Dan Mooney shot over a photo to run with some coverage. Here's a quick rundown of the pro races of the weekend. The big news of the weekend: neither Maris Strombergs or Dominique Daniels won either day in their respective classes.
Elite Men: Day one's main event was all about Intense/Phantom/On-Trac's Nic Long. Taking the inside line through turn one put him up front, where thanks to some smooth riding, he would stay for the remainder of the race. Maris Strombergs (Free Agent/Rockstar) would power down the straights chasing after Long, but never catching up, with Redline's Sam Willoughby in tow. Day two would find Free Agent's style dog Kyle Bennett leading the way from start to finish, Long pulling in for a clean second, and Willoughby pairing his thirds for the weekend.
Elite Women: Day one in the main event, Redline's Alise Post battled it out down the first straight with Dominique Daniels. Post went on to take the holeshot, with Daniels blowing up in turn one. Avoiding the carnage, Clayborn's Brooke Crain pulled a second, while Alltow Wrecking Crew's Alania Henderson slid into third. Day two was fairly similar. With Post (first) and Crain (second) out front, there was some wreckage in turn one involving Ashley Kneram, Alania Henerson and Courtney Tomei. Crupi's Ashley Verhagen avoided the wreck for a third.
Jr. Elite Men: Redman Rockstar's Corban Sharrah is on a move. Not only was he racing Jr. Elite; he was also rolling in Single A this weekend (where he won one day and went down in some wild carnage in day two's main). In Jr. Elite, Sharrah continues to prove himself, taking it wire to wire on Day One while Free Agent's Connor Fields chased him down, finishing within a half-a-bike length at the finish line. Redline's Tory Nyhaug trailed in for the third. Day two rolled around, and maybe it was the crash from his Single A main shaking him up a bit, or maybe Connor Fields just hates losing that much, but Sharrah would have to settle in second behind Fields, with Free Agent's new scout, Bling Bling Marin pulling a third.
