Chalk up another rider to our list of bio's featuring awesome unknown and unemployed talent out there. Meet Andy Maquire, Andy's another great rider from the expanding pool of talent emerging from the San Jose BMX scene. Andy has a unique style that is best describe by his friend Chris McMahon who made this edit, "He's all about jibber-jabber combos, long manual lines, flatties, spins, wild maneuvers and doing the unexpected." So sit back and enjoy this edit and then read more about Andy after the jump.
Full Name: Andrew Cutten Maguire
Nicknames: Andy is what I go by, but over the years there has been "Mini-Vandy," "Cutthroat Cuttlefish," "3 for $5," "The Girl," and many more.
Age: 24
Hometown: San Mateo, CA, currently living in Santa Cruz, CA
Current Job: Nada at the moment. I've been doing medical transcription/data-entry for a while, but it's been more of a side thing for a friend from high school. I have a degree in History and can type 60+wpm if anyone is interested.
Sponsors: Johnny Wu's Second Hand Clothing Emporium and Pacific Ave Cycles gives me discounts here and there. It's a rad shop down the street from the bike park in Santa Cruz.
Your current bike setup: 2nd Wave frame, 2 pegs, XS stem, bent wheels, cut bars, fakies with cassettes that run gross.
ESPN.com: Apple or PC?
Andy Maguire: Apple now, but PC literate. Does this help with my job search? Apple does lose mad points for producing a generation of iPod park snakes.
Who's the best rider in BMX and why?
I can't narrow that down but Joe Rich stands out because he and his brother were super cool to my brother and I when we were groms to the max. Ruben Alcantara is just a real dude who is down for donuts. Ryan Nyquist because he donated a lot of time and money towards making the new Santa Cruz Fun Spot a reality and 720 trucks for the fun of it. And Dave Voelker because he is the Lord and had Hulk Hogan horse hair at one point.
How would you describe your style?
I grew up shralping street and tiny dirt jumps made of broken seashells in the Bay 'burbs. Some time elapsed and I went from looking for "that perfect set-up" to the Santa Cruz open eye mission, under the tutelage of Jarrod Allen, Steve-O Scoffone, and James Carpenter. I enjoy riding, so I try to make the best of any spot. Does this mean I'm tech or something? Maybe just a hippie with low expectations.
If you could meet and ride with any Pro rider, who would it be and why?
It seems that this particular pro would punch me in the face and blow fire on any handrail I've ever grinded, but Mike Tag definitely. Plus his part in, "All Time Low" is pure brilliance and I'd buy him a Country Club from Safeway.
Any thanks?
Thanks to my parents and family, my girlfriend Janelle, my brother Tim for doing all the scary stuff on a bike first, my friends from the 831, homies from all over the Bay, Chi Chi Johnson, and the international who are down with the Country Club.
