Sandy CarsonRuben AlcantaraThe first time I witnessed Ruben Alcantara riding was in 1998 at Woodward. He was riding an overweight Huffy with Jnco Shoes and coming really close to pulling the then unthinkable double tailwhip 360 over a box jump. We all (should) know what happened from here.
Ruben kept going, unknowingly starting revolutions in the realms of tricks, style and bike technology. His inverts were all over the magazines, his wallride and grind combos were wildly innovative, and his approach to lightening up his bike ushered in a new era of bike setups.
I know we don't see a whole lot of Ruben in the media these days, but I wanted to give credit where it's due. Ruben changed the game for the better, and this is our small way of saying thanks.
