Park prelims finished up just after noon California time, and in the end, it was a hybrid mix split between bloodbath and creative lineage. San Diego's own Gary Young qualified in first, followed by 15-year-old Brett Banasiewicz in second and Diogo Canina in third. Rounding out the top five was Jeremiah Smith in fourth and Daniel Dhers in fifth.
Young, who also qualified first in park at X Games 15, utilized the course to the best of his pool-seasoned abilities, grinding over the visor, downside icepicking the underside of the visor and pulling one of the smoothest and longest downside double peg grinds around a corner ever seen. It was definitely the first time a rider qualified first on the merit of grinds. "I like using the accessories on my bike: pegs, brakes," said Young. "I was just having fun on the visor," he added. The visor, a unique plexiglass extension that runs over the course and is basically shaped like a helmet visor standing up, was Young's favorite section of the course, and it was literally assaulted by all twenty riders in qualifying.
Multiple pros entered the comp with fairly serious injuries, including Ryan Guettler (separated shoulder), Drew Bezanson (separated shoulder), Mark Webb (broken foot) and Morgan Wade (two-day old concussion, ten stitches above his eye.) And no one held back. In the end, Wade destroyed his front wheel on a transfer gone wrong and is now getting stitches on the opposite side of his forehead, while Bezanson attempted to icepick the roof above the rider staging area. Everyone is bruised and battered but alive; that's as much as I can say.
And that's it for day one of BMX at X Games 16. Tomorrow, we've got Street eliminations and Vert finals. Can Bestwick make it a four-peat in vert? If last week's Dew Tour win with ease is any indication, I'm going to say yes. But with Chad Kagy and Steve McCann on deck, anything is possible.
Tune into the X16 homepage for everything X. The BMX blog will sporadically updated, but the X16 homepage is where you want to be. Trust us.
