I'll admit, I've don't know all that much about S&M's AJ Anaya. I've never met him in person either, but I do know he can ride a bike like a machine and I was really impressed by the Web edits that he pumped out this year. So when videographer Dylan Pfohl mentioned to me that AJ had just put on some brakes for the very first time, and that they'd be filming some fresh new clips, I was all for an edit. It also gave me a chance to catch up with AJ and get to know him a little more. So watch AJ destroy it in the above video with some brakes on, and then read some random questions I threw at him after the jump.
Nickname: "The Anayalator"
Age: 21 for-ever-young
Sponsors: S&M Bikes, 50/50 BMX, Yums, Yellow Designs, X Balm
Years riding: 7
Current setup: Right now it's the S&M ATF frame with the Pitchfork XLT, Grand Slam XLT bars, and Profile Mini hubs with Primo rims. This is also the first time in my riding career that I'm running brakes. It's different from what I'm use to, but I'm having a lot of fun with them. So hopefully kids will put them back on and it'll be cool again.
Favorite Rider: My boy TJ Ellis, cause he's a rad dude on and off his bike. He's not scared to front flip whip into the wind.
ESPN: How did you get the nickname "Anayalater" and has Tony "Aneyerlator" Neyer ever confronted you about having such a similar nickname?
Anaya: I got the name from Roman Tencza back in 2005. I'm sure that was before Tony even got sponsored. I did say something to him but he said, "I don't care, you can take that crap". So I guess more than anything, he just borrowed my name for a while. No hard feelings.
Do you really have beef with Cory Jarmen? What's the deal with that?
Nah, not at all, I love Cory. He really did call me out on that video and that was real when I called him back. He told me the plan was that we would call each other out and then film the last one together. The idea was to show kids that you can have some fun with Web edits. At the time all that was on line was people doing the new hottest bangers. So we wanted to change it up. We couldn't finish the last one because Cory's knee kept giving out on him. On a side note, I did see online that he called me out again, so it's on...again!
Are you riding Dew Tour this weekend?
Yeah, I am. I will be riding dirt this weekend. I got a wild card for it, so I'm bringing the heat. Got to get that Kitty litter son.
What do you do outside of BMX? Do you have a day job, aside from riding? Are you in school?
I don't have a job. When I'm home, Yellow let's me be a part of the bike clinics. He also let's me help out with his clothing company yellowdesigns.com to make some side money. I don't go to school either but sometimes I wish I did though. I normally just hang out with my family, my friends and a few lucky ladies. Ok, maybe just one lucky lady. I love to go out on the weekend and get my dance on at the clubs.
