Danny, pictured here filming for the etnies video "Grounded."Sometimes, a rider has the ability to make tricks look so effortless that you forget how incredibly hard said tricks actually are. That, in a nutshell, is how I'd describe Houston, Texas native Danny Hickerson. Danny can do anything he wants on a bike with such precision and ease that his skills often seem to get overlooked. And that is a crime.
After Danny's first time out in X Games this past summer, we didn't hear much from him. But Danny has some big things in store for the coming months. On top of what's sure to be an amazing part in the upcoming Empire BMX video, Danny has a new signature frame in the works from Terrible One, and a year's worth of travel in store, starting with Australia in February. But enough from me, this is Danny Hickerson.
ESPN.com: First up, the Empire video. Do you have a part? Are you working on a part?
Hickerson: Yeah, these last few months I've been filming a lot. It's been so fun though, going on trips like we have this year. Thanks to Empire.
And when will it ever be done?
Last I heard, it was gonna be done around Christmas? But I am not sure.
What's it like to film with Dave Parrick? Is he as mysterious as he's cracked up to be?
Filming with Dave isn't bad. It's been awesome, but he is never on time.
Where are you living now? And how does it differ from Austin?
Right now I am living back in Houston. I moved back about eight months ago from Austin. Here in Houston, everything is so spread out, which means lots of driving for anything. Austin has always felt more like home than Houston has.
Can you also tell me about your T-1 frame? I know it's going through some revisions.
On this next run of frames, we slimmed down the tubing and design of the frame. The top and down tubes have internal gussets, offset headtube thickness, tapered seat stays and chain stays, new dropouts with removable Fly chain tensioners and removable brake mounts, and finally, an integrated seat clamp. I think that's about it. I'm stoked on it!
And on the back of that, can you describe what it's like to ride for T-1?
Awesome. More than anything, I still can't believe that I am a part of T-1 today, even after five years being on the team. I remember when I was growing up riding, and looking up to all the dudes on T-1, and occasionally getting to ride with them back in the day. It's great knowing that now, we're all friends through BMX and T-1. It's sick!
What happened with etnies? Are you getting any shoe hook ups now?
I was dropped from etnies because I wore a pair of Vans a few times. It's all good though. It was awesome riding for them. They sent me all over the world. If not for them, I would of never done that at the time, going on amazing trips to film for "Grounded." And I still thank John Povah and etnies for all the good times. But yeah, now I'm getting flow from Nike 6.0.
Can you tell me about your first X Games experience and what it was like?
It was awesome. I didn't know what to expect because I haven't really been to any contest in a long time. I had a blast going and riding with everyone.
A lot of people describe your riding as "effortless." Do you have to practice tricks, or do they come to you naturally?
I just do the same stuff I always do. I rarely do new tricks.
Finally, what's next for you?
Hopefully, more traveling than what I am currently doing nowadays. I just want to travel more next year. But I'm really looking forward to a T-1 trip we're doing to Australia in February.
