ESPN.com: How did you get into riding?
Burns: There's a few different things that got me into it. One mainly being this weird box car thing I made out of crap in my basement and a dolly. I crashed in into my neighbor's garage. My dad thought it was weird so he got me a Diamond Back Viper. I've been hooked since.
What's your preferred style of riding?
This will be hard to decipher. It's something like Van Homan meets Lemmy in a bathroom and they crossbreed with green gooey alien babe that squeezes out a Dave Young screaming baby that has motors for feet and a taste for air conditioner fluid.
How are things with Bonedeth going?
Swell well and alright but too hot to trot. We're constantly working on something, whether it's new products, riding and shooting film or photos, or having girls over in our basement and painting our bodies strange colors. We for surely keep ourselves constantly busy yet constantly entertained. I think my neighbors believe we're a combination of the family from 'People Under the Stairs" and the neighbors from 'The Burbs,' cause they look at us like we are the walking dead.
Tell me about the new frames, bars and components from Bonedeth.
Produced by sparkys..We have an Alex Liiv signature frame titled the Liiving Dead and my signature as well, the Creepozoid. Both frames are simple, strong, yet slightly light and good for what we do. We got a set of two-piece and four-piece bars. The bomber Bars are two-piece and my signature Deadman bars are the four-piece. We also have the Diet Grinders Pegs and the Speedfreak Sprocket. All of this will hit the shelves for the first time early this April. This stuff will go fast so get your hands greasy and slip your fingers in some of the goo while you can or you'll have to wait till summer!
What is the Creepozoid frame and why is it good for people?
The CreepOzoid frame is my signature piece. I picked the dimensions and such to fit my personal needs. Its' a mean frame, yet sleek and simple. The two best frames I've ever had were my Metal Bloodwolf made by Wethepeople, and now my Bonedeth Creepozoid produced by Sparkys. It's a mean frame, yet sleek and simple.
Why do you use 48s?
First off because you don't have to true your wheels as often. Secondly, 48 spokes will never blow out on you if a big drop or gap goes wrong. I've seen way too many people's wheels explode on gaps who are running 36s. They absorb way more impact, and they are really only the slightest bit heavier. More than half the guys on the Bonedeth team run 48s just to be safe and keep solid wheels. 36s are race wheels, and I can't remember that last time I saw someone drop 12-feet to flat at the NBL Grands, unless you can count Van Stout's nac nac x up to overshot landing during DareDevils of Dirt.
What made you want to ride and design the Dead Man bars?
As a child, I rode Hoffman Low Drags, and in 2009 John Maul hooked me up with a pair of the same bars and I just fell in love with the look and feel of them. The first thing I thought to make when we started Bonedeth hard goods was some similar bars. Last summer I bent the Low Drags I was running and I looked everywhere in the Web world to find some. All I came across were some remakes of Hoffman Low Drags from 2003 that the guys at Hoffman hooked me up with, which were very small but it kept me rolling for about six weeks. Thanks guys! So the Deadman bars are a more two-piece feeling Low Drag, with more back sweep and a taller rise. GL at sparkys really did a rad job. They are the best bar I've ever ridden.
Sandy CarsonDeadMan Bars. Launch Sean Burns Bike Check »What's your favorite thing about your bike?
These Deadman bars have me more hyped on riding than I was at the age of 16, seeing Little Devil videos. I always liked Castillo bars, and Standard's Strip bars, but they seemed too boxy to me. Finally I have a four-piece that feels similar to two-piece yet attracts the eye.
Do you typically spend a lot of time in cemeteries?
Summer/Fall is graveyard season, or depending on what part of the country you're in. I'd say I'm at the graveyard at least a few times a month. It's a great place to take girls or ride spots, or have a little outing.
Any special modifications we can't see?
Grips are modified with a stove top fire and butter knife, to melt the grips and shave them down so when you put them on new they are already a month's worn in.
What's next for you and Bonedeth this year?
I'm always working on stuff, same with Bonedeth. Chris Crawford has a video in the works which features a bunch of Bonedeth riders, so look forward to that. I believe there's talk of an éclat video in the works. But check the Bonedeth site as we have a bunch of new commercials in the works and we will be posting sections from last year's DVD "Surfin For The Ugly Broads."
