Federal BikesJared Washington from the new Federal promo.

Sometime in the late '90s, I was riding the fountain spot on George Street in downtown New Brunswick, N.J. when I ran into this kid that couldn't stop smiling, with the early stages of goofy dreads and glasses. His name was Jared Washington. There was a ten year age difference when we met. I think Jared was 14 and I was 24, but we bonded on the strength of BMX and awkwardly managed to hang out and ride with each other despite the weirdness of that age gap. As time passed and Jared grew up, I started helping him out with riding, getting him parts, calling Greg Walsh to flow him a Solid Duke frame -- the usual things that friends do for each other. We've been on trips together, gotten into our fair share of trouble and remained close friends to this day.

Through the years, Jared has been riding for Federal, and the this new video is the latest offering from Jared, and Metuchen, N.J. native Dominic Biro. There are a lot of place I could start with this, but I'll keep this short and say that some of the clips towards the end are done on a flat rail not far from the house I grew up in. It was the first thing I grinded on my bike way, way back in 1992 after seeing Dennis McCoy grind a handrail for the first time in Go: The Rider's Manual.
