Is it me or did the Madrid round of the Red Bull X-Fighters World Tour creep up out of nowhere? Maybe it's just because we've been so focused on X Games over here in the ESPN.com/Action offices. But, as exciting as X Games 16 is shaping up to be, Madrid is looking equally as exciting. Madrid will be a two-day event, with wild card qualifying happening later today, and the main event kicking off tomorrow [Friday] night. To find out more about how Madrid is shaping up, click here to read Tes Sewell's thorough preview, which dropped earlier this week.
On top of this nice little preview video above, I also hit up Australia's Cameron Sinclair to discuss his return to Madrid's Plaza de Torros. As you may remember, Sincs nearly lost his life on an under-rotated backflip the last time he was inside the infamous bullfighting arena, but like the true badass he is, Sincs has returned to Madrid to show the world that he ain't scared. Check out what he had to say about his triumphant return below.
Red BullCam Sinclair returns to the same bullfighting arena that nearly took his life last year.
ESPN.com: The last time you were in Madrid, you nearly died after under-rotating a double backflip. What's it feel like to be back in the Plaza de Torros, and were you hesitant to go in the first place?
Sinclair: It feels good to be back, to me it seems like nothing ever happened. I remember the place pretty clearly. I was never hesitant to pull out of competing here this year. I had wanted to come back since my crash, but this time I'll leave the double flip alone until X Games -- I'm just going to play it safe here. But I never felt like giving up. As soon as I came to in the hospital, all I could think about was getting back on the bike. If X Games was before Madrid X-Fighters, I would do the double flip here again, but I'd do it at the start of my run instead of the end, and make sure everything is 100%.
Is any of your family with you, and if so, do you think it'll be hard for them to watch you ride the same course you nearly lost your life on?
Just my fiance Brooke is here with me. But yeah, it'll definitely be hard for her to be here and stay in the same hotel as last time. All my family back home knows that I'm not doing the double flip, so they are a bit more relaxed.
Let's talk X Games; how's your preparation for Best Trick coming along? Can you give us any clues as to what you'll be throwing down, and do you think it'll be enough to win gold?
My preparation has been going really good. I've been hitting up [Brian] Deegan's foam pit almost every day. It took me a few days to get use to the ramp, but now it's all sorted. It's just been so hot in Temecula, so it's hard to put a lot of time in the pit. As for what tricks I plan to throw at X Games, I'll be throwing a nac double flip or a one hand double -- or maybe both -- we'll just have to wait and see. I guess if I land a double combo I should have a good chance.
Thanks so much man! Ride safe, have fun and we'll see you at X Games!!!
Thank you!
