Chris TedescoLevi Sherwood hit the eject button after his KTM hit neutral on the dangerous ramp-to-ramp setup, breaking two bones in his left wrist, lacerating his liver, bruising his lung, and fracturing a couple of vertebrae. Levi Sherwood, the 19-year-old rider from New Zealand previously confirmed as a Moto X Freestyle competitor for X Games 17, said today that he'll be off his bike for several months after a crash he suffered during practice at the Nitro Circus Live show in Las Vegas on Saturday.
"My bike skipped into neutral on the takeoff -- I don't know how or why, I haven't really quite figured it -- but I came up short and broke two bones in my left wrist, lacerated my liver, bruised my lung, banged my kidney around a bit, and fractured a couple of vertebrae," said Sherwood, speaking from his hospital room in Las Vegas. "It's FMX: S--- happens. My back is what hurts the most and I know I'm lucky it wasn't worse."
Sherwood says he's trying to stay positive despite seeing his dreams for the 2011 competition season dashed. In addition to being slated for X Games 17 in July (Sherwood won silver in Moto X Freestyle in 2010 behind Travis Pastrana, and won Rookie of the Year at the 2010 TransWorld Motocross Awards), he is currently tied with Dany Torres for fourth place in the overall standings on the 2011 Red Bull X-Fighters tour, behind Robbie Maddison, Andre Villa and Nate Adams. After winning individual X-Fighters events in 2009 and 2010 he was considered to be a podium threat at each event this year and a challenger for the overall title.
Red BullLevi Sherwood hadn't won either of the two 2011 Red Bull X-Fighters competitions thus far, but he was a solid threat for event wins and a possible title contender. He'll be off his bike for over two months according to his doctor."Obviously I'm disappointed," says Sherwood. "I knew before I even hit the ground that I'd be missing all these events coming up, and after talking with my doctors this morning I don't think I'll realistically be back on my bike for two or three months. It's just been one of those years this year and things haven't gone my way, but I'm trying not to get too broken up about it: I'm only 19 so I know there will be plenty more opportunities to come."
Sherwood traveled with Pastrana and his crew in February and March for the Nitro Circus Live tour dates in New Zealand and Australia, and says he was stoked to see everybody again in Vegas.
"It was cool hanging out with everyone because I hadn't seen my mates from that tour in a couple of months," Sherwood says. "I fell in practice and I was as bummed to miss that show as I was about missing any of the contests on the calendar."
