Dorey, Hansen win WSI superpipe
Kenworthy, Logan earn top AFP overall titles for the 2011 season
Two Canadians topped the podium at Sunday's AFP World Championships superpipe, with Justin Dorey winning for the men and Keltie Hansen winning the women's field.
Dorey's first run -- double cork 1260 to flatspin 3 to switch dub 10 Japan to rightside 9 -- earned him the highest score of the day, a 95.2. "I've never grabbed my switch dub 10 before, so it was good timing for me to learn how," Dorey said afterward. "It was really cool to win this event again -- I won it in 2005 or 2006 and it was my first real result I ever got so it feels good to do it again."
Tucker Perkins, who did a massive double cork 1260 on the last hit of his first run, took second with a score of 85.8. David Wise was third with 85. "This is a really nice way to end the season," Wise said about his podium finish.
Keltie Hansen, 18, won the women's field with back-to-back 540s, a cork 900, and a 720, garnering a score of 85.2 on her first run. This was Hansen's first big win of her career. "I'm really shocked and surprised," Hansen said. "I've been trying to podium all year, so this means a lot to me."
Devin Logan took second for the women with a score of 82.8 and Anais Caradeux took third with an 81.8.
A one-hit superhit contest immediately followed the pipe contest, with Gus Kenworthy taking first for the men and Sarah Burke -- who landed a 1080, the first woman skier to do so in competition -- winning for the women.
The World Skiing Invitational this week at Whistler was the last contest of the 2011 season. The final rankings for the AFP overall titles -- the skier who did the best in all disciplines all season long -- were tallied at the end of Sunday. Gus Kenworthy narrowly beat out Simon Dumont for the overall men's title, with Bobby Brown finishing third overall. For the women, Devin Logan took the number one overall spot, followed by Keri Herman and Dania Assaly.
