Carlsbad, CA (March 31, 2009) Ian Walsh's 6th annual Menehune Mayhem Surf event presented by O'Neill and Red Bull was held this past Saturday at Maui's Ho'okipa Beach Park. Walsh, an advocate for introducing and instilling a passion for surfing in Hawaii's youth, created the free event with the help of O'Neill and Red Bull as a way of giving back to the children and teens of Maui as well as showcasing what the surf culture and sport has to offer.
The weekend's event included more than 80 kids who participated in the festivities, tons of amazing gifts from Walsh's sponsors, a BBQ, a dance competition and of course the surf competition to become the reigning Mayhem Mayhem Champion. Iami Duvault and Ian Gentil, two of Maui's young up and coming surfers, were the two multi final competitors of the event and both displayed dominant performances. Duvault took the top position in the boys 11 and under category after showing his impressive skills including vertical top turns and swooping cutbacks leading him to also surf his way into the boys 12-13 category where he placed 4th. Gentil took 2nd in the boys 12-13 category and 3rd in the boys 14-15 category where he had amazing runs showcasing round house cutbacks and fin free front side blasts. Among the other top performances were Joao Muffani whose dominating smooth and aggressive style led him to receive the Grom of the Day award and Keoni Perkins who took the boys 16-17 category title.
