Black Market Money

Photograph By Wallner

Osh, Kyrgyzstan: The Uzbek currency is so inflated that the highest note that they had equaled about 15 cents. Paying for a cab ride, or just buying bread and coffee, meant that you had to pay with a handful of notes. Also, their currency has two rates, the bank rate which is horrible and the black market rate which is almost twice as much. So we would go in the back of these liquor shops to exchange U.S. dollars to Uzbek soms.
