Ryan Spencer is a relative unknown skater from Hawaii but that's all changing fairly rapidly. Newly anointed on the Foundation, Dekline and Super Brand teams, Spencer is popping up with coverage all over the place. When his first big video part drops in Foundation's upcoming, "WTF" video, we'll all get to see what he's really made of. For now, have a look at the pictures, read the interview and get to know Spencer, a skater on the rise who's going nowhere but up.
Ben KarpinskiRyan Spencer slides a nosebluntslide on a fun ditch in Long Beach.Where are you from?
Maui, Hawaii.
What was it like growing up skating in Hawaii?
It sucked but at the same time I think it made me the skater I am today. I didn't have the perfect skateparks out there or the best spots. So it made me look harder for spots or made me skate the spots with rough ground. I guess it was kind of like an East Coast type of skating. It's so far west it's east. Ha!
Favorite skaters out of Hawaii?
Sean Reilly and Adrian Adrid
Did you surf as well?
When I was younger surfing was like all I did and the only skating I did was on longboard skateboards. Slowly I just started skating more because it was easier to just go out and do. I got super over waiting for waves to be good or not having a ride to the beach where the waves were. It was so much easier to just hop on my board and skate around town.
How did you get hooked up with Foundation?
My good friend, Elijah Berle, rode for them for a long time so he would mention my name to [ESPN correspondent and Foundation Team Manager] Mike Sinclair and eventually I sent Sinclair some footage and now I'm here.
What is the healthiest thing you have ever seen Mike Sinclair eat?
Ha! Damn, I don't even know. I'd probably have to say these little doughnut poppers from Einstein Bagels.

Seems like you can skate just about anything. What is your ideal spot?
I'm always backing the little fun spots, like where there's a bunch of stuff that everyone can skate: little banks, ledges, red curbs.
How's your part shaping up for the Foundation video, "WTF?"
I hope it's coming along good. Some more traveling would be nice.
What has been your favorite Foundation video?
Well "Art Bars" is a wonderfully made video and nowadays that's one of my favorites. But back in the day, when I was a little skate rat, "That's Life" was like the sickest thing out. I watched that video so much when I was a kid.
You've been taking some heavy slams lately and recently lost your front teeth. How many dentist appointments have you had by now?
I've had quite a few so far. First I just had the front two teeth extracted and a root canal on a cracked tooth. Now I've got two different dentists for all the reconstruction that's going to happen. I've got to do bone grafts in my gums to try to grow back some bone there so they can implant rods in there to put the implant teeth in. Basically I wont be done until 2013. I'll have dental surgeries and checkups every other week until then and I'm looking at over $10,000 in medical bills. But life's still good.
Ben KarpinskiRyan Spencer dips a feeble transfer on a high and lengthy bar somewhere in SoCal.How did getting on Super Brand come about?
I think maybe from skating those Crailtap contests. Tony Larson, who used to work at Girl, hit me up and had me come down and go to lunch with him. He was basically just like, "Yeah we want you on the team." They've been backing me, so I'm super hyped on what they got going on over there. Should be good things to come from them over there.
I noticed you were running rails on the bottom of your board the other day. Is
that for special occasions or on every set up now?
Nah, just for fun. I just set up a board without them but rails are sweet. You got boardslides for days on just about anything.
