Tadashi YamaodaFrom left to right: HellaClips' Josh Kalis and Colin McKay.HellaClips.com was launched about a year ago by skate veterans Colin McKay and Josh Kalis. The site basically offers a daily one-stop viewing experience for skateboarders who want to see the latest videos in skateboarding. Content is gathered from sites of companies, magazines, blogs and even user-submitted footage to be included in the new skate video superhighway called "Hellaclips."
Behind the scenes hella work is done by Sean Hays (marketing), Lester Legarda (web and upload master), Corey Cabrera (filmer) -- all who work to keep the site hella fresh. Hellaclips has also began to bring their own original content to the site with features such a brick layers, interviews, and other exclusive clips. For example: the Cody McEntire mini part. Also to celebrate all the mayhem (good and bad) that has happened in the skate video world of 2011, McKay came up with the idea of the "Hellies," a mock award ceremony, which took place in front of a green screen in McKay's garage, awarding the best and the worst clips featured on the site.
"The response was huge," McKay said, "we're definitely doing it again next year."
When asked about getting any resistance from the industry in regards to nature of the site, reposting videos, Kalis insists that "we're not out to steal content," saying hellaclips has tried to follow an edict, keeping an open line of communication with companies so if one didn't want them to "help" share their content, it was respected. In fact, with the rapid growth of the site and with companies' viral hunger to get as many views to a video as possible, Hellaclips has been welcomed with open arms.
Hella Clips' latest exclusive video feature, "Brick Layers" with Josh Kalis, features Shake Junt's Shane Heyl discussing Gino Ianucci's part in the 1996 World Industries/Blind/101 video "Trilogy."
