On February 1, a video began making the rounds about professional skateboarder Terry Kennedy openly and honestly talking at length about the ways drugs affected his neighborhood and home life growing up. Kennedy goes on to espouse skateboarding as an alternative to this negativity and as his "natural high."
As it turns out, Natural High is a nonprofit organization that began in 1994. Their goal and message is to offer kids healthy alternatives to the abuse of drugs and alcohol through finding their own "natural high." Through their DVD series, and now through online video featurettes, the organization hopes to reach 12 million kids with their message over the next five years.
Plan B and Nike Skateboarding pro Paul Rodriguez played a starring role in "Natural High 4." That DVD, and the rest of the Natural High DVD series is distributed for free and has been used in more than 10,000 schools across the country says Michelle Ahearne, Executive Director for Natural High.
Rodriguez and Kennedy aren't the only action sports athletes who've offered their likenesses, stories and endorsements of the Natural High program. Tony Hawk, Laird Hamilton, Gretchen Bleiler, Ricky Carmichael, Dillon Perillo, Taylor Knox and Timmy Curran have all put their weight behind it.
Ahearne is enthusiastic to point out that Kennedy and all the other athletes and celebrities that have gotten behind the Natural High message have done so voluntarily and for no compensation. "They are strictly volunteering their time and story to further the natural high message." Ahearne says.
