Currier, Sablone win Supergirl Jam

At least, that's how it might have appeared to onlookers strolling through the eclectic Los Angeles neighborhood over the weekend. The boardwalk played host to the fifth annual Supergirl Jam, where 100-plus top female skate and snowboard athletes threw down in a snowboarding rail jam, a street skateboarding contest and an amateur skate event. Earlier in the month, the series also hosted a 6-star ASP Pro Junior surf competition in Oceanside, won by defending U.S. Open junior champ Lakey Peterson.
Supergirl, billed as the largest all-female action sports contest, attracts top talent from across the world. "Someday when there are more girl skaters, there may not be a need for all-girl contests," said 25-year-old skateboarder Alexis Sablone, who won the street event. "But for now, it's important that girls see what's possible."
The crowd cheered on Sablone, the reigning Supergirl skate street champ and 2010 X Games gold medalist, as she flew across the custom-built skate street course. Sablone's run included a kickflip 50-50 on the hubba and a nollie heelflip over the Euro gap. Lacey Baker, 19, placed second; Amy Caron, 26, placed third.
Between the palm trees and amidst beach-goers, organizers hauled in 80,000 pounds of snow. The 28-foot-tall, man-made slope attracted women like Danyale Patterson, Laurie Currier and Desiree Melancon. Patterson, the 20-year-old defending champ from Alaska, was beat out by Currier who landed tricks like a gap to 180 to switch 50-50 revert.
"Competing on the beach really pumps me up because it reaches an alternative type of crowd than in the mountains," said Currier. "It provides them with an opportunity to see snowboarding first hand." Currier's first place win in the snowboarding event marked her third Supergirl title (also: 2008, 2009). She bagged $2,500 and the neon pink Supergirl cape. Patterson snatched up second place; Melancon took third.
Amateur skaters also qualified for the chance to compete against the pros in the street event. One amateur, Melissa Spillman, went for a Supergirl first and took on both the skate and snow comps, "Where else can you compete in both in the same day?" she said. "And at the beach, to top it off!"
Highlights from the Supergirl Jam will air on FOX Sports Net and Fuel TV on October 7 at 5 p.m. and 11 p.m. ET.
