The newly announced collaboration between outerwear giant Carhartt and New York City's 5boro Skateboards has a lot going for it. First up, it started with the simple gesture of 5boro offering Carhartt's Pontus Alv a guest board. That seed grew into a road trip as 5boro and Carhartt W.I.P. [Work In Progress] team riders piled in the van together to skate everything between the Big Apple and Motor City. And it all came full circle back to New York, where Alv sat down with 5boro Brand Director Mark Nardelli to design a collaboration that pays homage to their skate mission.

WHAT IT IS:
All said, the collab produced the Alv guest board (in three sizes), a 53-mm wheel, a pocket T, and, in what is perhaps the effort's standout asset, the digger coat. Made with ripstop cotton in a stonewash black, the coat comes with a shrink-wrapped newspaper with stories and photos about the teams' rally from New York to Detroit. Also, the inside of the coat is printed with Alv's drawings from the trip. Says Nardelli: "It's light, it has pockets you can put a sketch pad in [or] a phone, and still cruise or 'zone around,' as Pontus would call it. We really made a jacket that I think suited [our] personal taste. It's just a basic jacket that's functional and customized with Pontus's graphics and cobranded between 5boro and Carhartt."

WHY IT RULES:
Boards are cool. So are wheels and T-shirts. But for a collaboration to stand out among the masses, it needs something special. Like this digger coat that comes with a skate-mission journal and printed with skater-made art. And the icing on the cake? According to the brand's Bertrand Trichet, this coat has the "simplicity and durability" found in any Carhartt. It's premium outerwear from an American company originally founded 1889 to create tough, comfortable garments for railroad workers. Sounds like something you can skate in.
