Last year, ESPN Skate editor, Adam Salo, told me that I have more East Coast pride than anyone he's ever met. I took that as a compliment and then we went and skated some fun little mini ramp. Anyway, this is one of those posts where it's going to pour out, almost to a point of being obnoxious.
Friday night was the World Premiere of Alex DePhillipo's "Dark Fall" at the House of Blues in Atlantic City. It's the new action-documentary about leading the surf life in New Jersey, complete with the glorious seasons, phenomenal cinematography, and entertaining culture. I already reviewed the film here, so I don't have to get into that again.
What I do have to get into is how insanely "Jersey" the premiere was. It's amazing just how different this would have been anywhere else in the world.
Nick LaVecchiaThe queitest your ever going to see people from N.J.For example:
A fight broke out during the film.
Instead of some ex-pro skaters playing jazz music, the film was followed by a local thrash punk outfit called Jumpship.
The crowd was dotted with sequined mini skirts and high heels.
Bruce was on the soundtrack.
A friend of mine had his head split open.
Throughout the course of the evening, two of the film's stars were said to be arrested.
You're just not going to get that in Encinitas or Tribecca. Is it any wonder why TV writers can't wait for the next NJ reality show? This stuff pretty much writes itself.
Nick LaVecchiaFilm maker, Alex DePhillio (left) and surfer/narrator Andrew Gesler. The Dark Fall plays at the Tuckerton Seaport on August 5th and the Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts and Sciences on August 6th (for those who want to see the film without a drunken brawl.) They're working on an Asbury Park show with the Bouncing Souls in late August. Then it's on to the New York Surf Film Festival, an East Coast tour, California dates for the Jersey transplants, and X Dance this winter. Here's the trailer if you haven't seen it.
Narrator Andrew Gesler is right. We wouldn't want to live anywhere else.
