Fine art can't be rushed, and after romping around the world for the past couple of years with camera in hand, Santa Cruz-based filmmaker/photographer Patrick Trefz is finally ready to unveil his latest masterpiece, "Idiosyncrasies;" a film that seeks to explore "the relationship of art, music, and surf craft on the aquatic lives" of some of our more iconic waveriders, including Tom Curren, Richard Kenvin, Andrew Kidman, "Pops" and "Junior" Mulcoy, and shipwright Christian Beamish. Finally, after all the traveling, chasing, filming and editing, Trefz is ready to let the greater surfing public see what he's been up to.

"At the start of the summer we had screenings at the San Sebastian Surf Film Festival, and then our offical premier was in Santa Cruz -- complete with Mulcoys, screaming, and barfights -- then we hosted another screening in San Francisco, but we're having our first big showing in front of surf industry types this week," says Trefz.

And the premier he's talking about comes to Laguna Beach this Thursday, July 29. The film shows at 7:00 pm at South Coast Cinema, followed by a reception and art exhibition at the famed Surf Gallery from 8:00 to 10:00 pm, and yes, Beamish will be dragging his homemade boat up to the gallery for everybody to see.

"I'm excited," continues Trefz. "You spend all this time working on something like this, and you become so familiar with the material, that to show it in a theater and see people's reactions, it's kind of what the whole surf movie process is about."

Trefz is currently planning premiers for other parts of the country, but like his filmmaking process, those dates and locations will be announced when they're fit for public consumption.
