In January of 2011, NorCal surfer Jacob Trette was testing his mettle at Maverick's when he missed a wave and found himself the No. 1 pin in the alley with a Nor Pac bowling ball careening toward him. Trette tried paddling over it, but the monster caught him in the worst place. He got a hold-down, nearly drowned and spent two days in a medically induced coma.

With the Pacific lit up again, Mav's has been working all week. Today, Trette was going to face his fears and give the famed break another shot.
