Carissa Moore, Honolulu, Hawaii

With her dad in her corner providing constant support, last year Carissa Moore arrived at the U.S. Open looking every bit the wide-eyed teenager that she is. "It's crazy," she said. "The people everywhere, the scene on the beach, the surf as big as I've ever seen it in California -- I don't know how to describe it, other than 'crazy.'" Undaunted, she made the semifinals in 2009, only to eventually lose her way in the oversized surf and relentless current. This could very easily be her year to reach the finals, just weeks before her 18th birthday. (Jason Kenworthy)
