The 2010 U.S. Open of Surfing

It's among the oldest and most prestigious titles in all of surfing. And these days, with $100,000 to the men's champ and $50,000 to the women's champ (record purses, both of them), it's also one of the most coveted. The U.S. Open of Surfing has had its ups and downs over the years -- small conditions, poor turnout, spotty organization -- but for the past few years it has indisputably been the premier surf event on the U.S. mainland. The proof's not just in the crowds -- more than half a million of 'em over the week -- but in the surfing, too. This year saw a repeat champion for the first time in 24 years, plus some new faces hoisting some big hardware and even bigger checks. (U.S. Open)
