Miguel Pupo

There were a lot of winners at the U.S. Open this week. Simpson won the cheddar, Bob Hurley won the accolades, and young Miguel Pupo from Brazil won some much-deserved international acclaim. When it came to massive tail blows and lofty air reverses Pupo had them down like clockwork. His talents in languages other than Portuguese? Not so much. "I reckon more than anything he's going to have to work on his English ... as good as this kid is, he's going to be doing a lot more interviews on the world's stage in the years to come," ribbed webcast announcer Barton Lynch. In all seriousness, Pupo's at the forefront of a remarkably talented -- and hungry -- pack of young Brazilian surfers that are just now starting to emerge from South America. (Jason Kenworthy)
