As part of ESPN's ambitious "30 for 30" film project, "Birth of Big Air" documents BMX legend Mat Hoffman and his quest to conquer big air, which started back in 1992. Before the X Games, before any real TV coverage of BMX, and before anyone knew what was coming next, Mat Hoffman had built a gigantic quarterpipe in a remote field in Oklahoma City and was doing airs in the 25-foot range. The sheer physics of the feat is stand alone crazy. But for Mat Hoffman, it wasn't just a crazy feat. Throughout his career, Hoffman ignored conventional limitations, instead, focusing his efforts on the purity of the sport and the pursuit of "what's next." Even without endorsements, cameras, fame and fans, Hoffman would still be working to push the boundaries of gravity. Teaming with Academy Award nominee Spike Jonze and Johnny Knoxville, along with director Jeff Tremaine, "Birth of Big Air" showcases the inner workings and exploits of the man who gave birth to "Big Air."
"Birth of Big Air" was an official selection of the 2010 Tribeca Film Festival, and will premiere on ESPN on Thursday, July 29. Check local listings for times.
