Ophelie David breaks leg, out for Skier X

ASPEN, Colo. -- French skier Ophelie David fractured her left fibula on the Skier X course on Wednesday during Winter X Games Aspen 2012 practice at Buttermilk Mountain. After being treated on-site and at Aspen Valley Hospital, X Games Medical staff has confirmed that David will miss the women's Skier X qualifying rounds Friday.

David was a favorite to win gold this week at Winter X Games 16. She dominated the sport with four-peat Winter X wins from 2007-2010, took second place behind Canadian skier Kelsey Serwa in 2011, and has been on the podium at Winter X Games every year since 2006.

Her crash was the second major accident on the course on Wednesday: Lindsey Jacobellis, similarly dominant in Women's Snowboarder X, tore the ACL in her left knee earlier in the day and will miss the rest of the season.

Watch for potential podium shakeups in the Women's Skier X finals on Sunday: Serwa is also out of competition this year, with injuries sustained in a crash last week at the FIS World Cup race in Alpe d'Huez, France.

"My season was ended early after a sweet flat spin, 360, spread-eagle crash over a boxed feature and onto the flat hard ground," Serwa told ESPN last week. "I got an MRI and the results show a blown ACL, bone bruising, slight tear to my MCL and some meniscus damage. Other than the ACL, everything should be able to heal itself."

Julia Murray and 2010 Olympic champion Ashleigh McIvor, Serwa's teammates on the Canadian national team, are also out with ACL injuries sustained earlier in the season.
