Shaun White wins WX Slope
TIGNES, France -- Shaun White won his second gold medal in as many days at Winter X Tignes by winning the Men's Snowboard Slopestyle Finals Friday.
White improved his first-run score of 95 with a second run that included three double corks in a row, including a switch double cork 1080 and two double cork 1260s, for a top score of 97.
It has been three years since White won a Slopestyle event at Winter X, where he earned Slopestyle and SuperPipe gold at Winter X Games 2009. White won the SuperPipe finals Thursday night in Tignes.
"These guys have been pushing the limits of what's possible in the Slopestyle course and they put the gauntlet in front of me," White said. "I think I've finally caught up and I'm happy to be back."
Mark McMorris, a double gold medalist in Slopestyle and Big Air at Winter X Aspen 2012, earned silver Friday with a score of 90 and a run that included a frontside cab 1080 and a frontside double cork 1080.
Eric Willett took bronze with a score of 88 and a run that included two double cork 1080s.
"It's been a good contest. The weather's nice, the jumps are big, the rails are heavier than last year. Obviously, Shaun is back," McMorris said. "Back in black. I'm just going to have to come back and beat him next year."
Willett earned his second bronze in a row at Winter X Tignes. "That was an emotional rollercoaster," he said. "I'm happy to make the podium, but I think one of the Norwegians (Stċle Sandbech or Aleksander Oestreng) should have been in my place -- they both rode so well. But I'm stoked I was able to keep my podium streak here."
White's win marked his 24th X Games event medal and 16th gold. This is his first time at Winter X Games Tignes.
"I was just happy to win the pipe and to come out here and try my best," he said. "I'm just ecstatic."
