Kanaan to miss 6-8 weeks of action

 Associated Press

DETROIT -- Brazilian Tony Kanaan will be released from a hospital Monday, two days after being injured in a crash during qualifying for the Tenneco Automotive Grand Prix of Detroit.

Kanaan sustained a compound fracture of the left forearm, broken ribs and a mild concussion Saturday when his car crashed into a wall on the Belle Isle track.

On Saturday night, Kanaan's broken forearm was fitted with two plates and 14 screws during an operation that lasted more than two hours, CART said.

Kanaan was in good condition Sunday at Detroit Receiving Hospital, spokeswoman Mattie Majors said.

Kanaan, driving a Reynard-Mercedes for the Mo Nunn racing team, was injured when his car slid into the wall in Turn 7, coming off a fairly long straightaway on the 2.3-mile, 14-turn road course. At that point, Kanaan had turned the fastest qualifying lap at 112.889 mph.

Dr. Steve Olvey, CART's director of medical affairs, said Saturday that Kanaan likely would be sidelined 6-8 weeks.
