Gary Scelzi takes eighth Top Fuel win

 Associated Press

MILLINGTON, Tenn. -- Jeg Coughlin clinched his first NHRA Pro Stock championship Sunday and won for the 10th time this season.

Coughlin shared an emotional winner's-circle celebration with brother Mike at Memphis Motorsports Park. Mike won the Pro Stock Truck event at the AutoZone Nationals.

Jeg drove his Oldsmobile to a 6.878-second run at 199.64 mph, edging Scott Geoffrion, who covered a quarter-mile in 6.896.

Gary Scelzi and Ron Capps also won.

Scelzi earned his eighth Top Fuel victory of the season when he beat Larry Dixon, who crashed midway through the run.

Dixon was taken to the Regional Medical Center in Memphis, where he was in critical condition Sunday night. No other details were available.

Top Fuel driver Tony Schumacher, injured in a crash Saturday, was released from the hospital Sunday.

Capps ended a 46-race winless streak by defeating Whit Bazemore in the Funny Car final.

Mike won for the first time this season, defeating Stevie Johns, who jumped the start.
