TOPEKA, Kan. -- John Force moved another step closer to winning his ninth NHRA Winston Funny Car championship with a win at the 11th annual Advance Auto Parts NHRA Nationals at Heartland Park on Monday.

Force blistered the quarter-mile in 4.797 seconds at 316.97 mph to defeat Tommy Johnson Jr., who ran 5.175 seconds at 239.40 in the Funny Car category.

Doug Herbert, Mike Edwards and Bob Panella were also winners of their respective categories. The $1.7 million race is the 18th of 22 events in the $40 million NHRA Winston Drag Racing Series.

Herbert took his third Top Fuel victory in 1999 by running in 4.664 seconds at 312.35 mph to defeat Joe Amato's 7.519 at 110.14.

Edwards secured his first victory of the season in Pro Stock, on a hole shot of 6.953 at 198.35, ahead of Troy Coughlins' 6.917 at 199.11.

Panella earned his third Pro Stock Truck victory of the season by defeating Larry Kopp. Panella ran a 7.597 at 177.18, compared to Kopps' 7.655 at 175.18.
