First-year Virginia coach Mike London will spice up spring practices for the Cavs with a little field trip. He's going to take the team to Old Dominion on March 27, where the Cavaliers will have an intrasquad scrimmage at Foreman Field in Norfolk.
After the scrimmage, fans will have an opportunity to meet Virginia's players and coaches. Also in Norfolk, the staffs from Virginia and ODU will hold a coaches' clinic. One of London's new assistants, Chip West, came to UVa from Old Dominion.
Don't be surprised to see more of these tactics by London. It reflects his personality. He wants to get the team exposed to the fans and vice versa and rebuild the culture around the program, not just the team itself. He's very approachable and down-to-earth, and he wants Virginia football to be a part of the community. He also wants his team to have a little fun. And, of course, he'll be showcasing the team in a hotbed recruiting area. All of those off-field efforts should eventually pay off.
