Separation has occurred in the standings, but not necessarily on the field.
Eight teams in the league combined for a total of five offensive touchdowns this past weekend, and none of those eight scored more than one offensive touchdown. Three teams -- Virginia, Duke and Maryland -- didn't get into the end zone. The only team ranked in the top four this week that was held to one offensive touchdown is Boston College.
Five teams turned the ball over at least four times, with UNC leading the way with six.
So the separation between No. 1 and No. 12 in this league isn't exactly overwhelming. Three of the top four teams won on the road, and two of them -- Florida State and NC State -- didn't turn it over once.
This week's top teams in the ACC were rewarded for playing complete games:
1. Georgia Tech -- The Yellow Jackets ran all over Miami, which couldn't stop the triple-option or B-back Jonathan Dwyer. With the win, the Yellow Jackets kept themselves in contention for the ACC Championship Game.
2. Boston College -- The Eagles are now down to their backup quarterback, Dominique Davis, after starter Chris Crane broke his collar bone. They'll have home-field advantage for the season finale this week against the Terps, and need just one win to return to the ACC title game.
3. Florida State -- The Seminoles dominated every phase of the game in College Park, and will now face rival Florida while hoping for a BC loss.
4. NC State -- The Wolfpack have won three straight behind the play of quarterback Russell Wilson, and this past weekend he got an equally impressive performance from the defense against rival UNC. The Pack needs to beat Miami to become bowl eligible.
5. Miami -- The Hurricanes squandered an opportunity in Atlanta, and snapped their five-game winning streak. They'll be playing for the bowl reps this weekend at NC State, not the ACC championship.
6. Virginia Tech -- The Hokies were stifled by the Duke defense, and have to beat Virginia at home this weekend in order to play in Tampa. For the first time all season, a receiver caught a touchdown pass.
7. Maryland -- The Terps couldn't take care of business on senior night in Byrd Stadium, and now they'll be playing for their bowl selection on Saturday in Atlanta. It's a road game against a ranked team, and nothing is on the line in terms of the ACC race, so odds are they'll play lights out.
8. Wake Forest -- The Demon Deacons scored two defensive touchdowns against BC, and had kicker Sam Swank back, but still found a way to lose the game and any hope of playing in the ACC Championship Game. They'll finish the season against Vanderbilt.
9. North Carolina -- The Tar Heels fell out of the rankings, and out of contention for the ACC championship. Six turnovers were the root of their problems against NC State.
10. Clemson -- The Tigers are one win away from a bowl game, but can't count on four turnovers from South Carolina this weekend to help them get there.
11. Virginia -- It's hard to believe this team once looked like it was a sure bet to win the Coastal Division. Since turning their season around with four straight wins, the Cavs have now lost three straight and have to win in Blacksburg this weekend just to get to a bowl game.
12. Duke -- The Blue Devils made progress with their four-win season and have a chance to beat UNC this weekend, especially if quarterback Thaddeus Lewis returns and the defense plays like it did in Lane Stadium.
